Our Chosen Genre

SOCIAL REALISM

Social Realism is the genre we have chosen for our A2 practical (film teaser trailer). We chose this because we wanted to focus on real issues, such as abuse, crime, teenage stress and bullying.

Social Realism is an international genre, which is particularly popular in British and French cinema. The characters, dialogue and settings are all made up but are inspired by the real world.
Better than any other genre, social realism has shown us to ourselves, Pushing the boundaries in the effort to put the experiences of  people on the screen, and shaping our ideas of what British cinema can be. While our cinema has experienced all the fluctuations in fortune of Hollywood's first export territory, social realism has been Britain's richest gift to world cinema.

Social Realism can also been seen as auto-biography’s, they are not portrayed in the same way but they show us the lives of a person or a group. Showing us what is happening within their lives and how it affects them and the people around them. An example would be 'Trainspotting'(1996), a story about Renton, who is deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, then tries to clean up and get out, despite the allure of the drugs and influence of friends.

A few examples of Social Realist films are as follows:
*Juno
*This Is England
*Fish Tank
*Painful Secrets
*Billy Elliot
*Bend It Like Beckham
*Kidulthood
*Kes
*The Full Monty

Social realist films tend to often have the same attributes(click on the mind map below):
