Synopsis Analysis

Definition of a synopsis in the Oxford English Dictionary:
- noun (plural synopses /-siːz/)
  • a brief summary or general survey of something:a synopsis of the insurance cover provided is set out below
  • an outline of the plot of a play, film, or book.
Our synopsis we created for our film is;
A young girl documents the struggles, torments and abuse she encounters everyday on an anonymous online blog. When a girl at her school stumbles across Katie’s blog, she is bullied even more severely than before. After attempting to commit suicide, Katie attempts to re-build her life. When Katie meets the love of her life Charlotte at a support meeting, her life begins to change for the better.
Other synopsis' of the same genre of film are simular in the way we have created ours. We have chosen to mention our protagonists' struggles and hardship in our synopsis, and included the main disturbance of the equilibrium to make our film seem more interesting and more appealing to our audience.
Kidulthood synopsis:
'For 15 year old Trife, a boy from West London, life is a day-to-day struggle. Trapped between the worlds of his school friends, the girl he loves, and the draw of his powerful and dangerous uncle, Trife must choose between the path he knows and the life of guns, drugs and violence that h e has come to know only too well.
When a class mate's suicide leaves Trife and his crew, Mooney and Jay, with the day off school it seems as though circles of violence may have finally come to a tragic conclusion - but in a world where sex is currency, drugs are easy and violence is a way of life, trouble can never be too far around the corner.'
This synopsis is rather long, but highlights the struggles of teenage life; gangs, drugs, abuse and hardship, and appeals directly to a teenage audience. It gives away a brief description of the story line, but still leaves the narrative open to surprise the audience.

                                                Fish Tank synopsis:
'Mia Williams  is 15 years old and lives in a shabby apartment block with her mother, Joanne, and younger sister, Tyler. Mia is a reckless and rebellious teenager who frequently argues with her mother and sister and has run afoul of the authorities at school, leading to her being suspended. With plenty of time on her hands, Mia spends her days drinking when she can find alcohol and partying in a empty flat near her apartment. Joanne is a single mother, and she's begun dating a new man, Connor; when Joanne brings him home to meet the girls, Mia is immediately attracted to him, and it's soon clear Connor feels the same way about her. Mia attempts to seduce Connor to take him away from her mother, and when she succeeds, Joanne's greatest anger is not with the man who has slept with her underaged daughter, but the girl who is now a rival for the affections of her lover.' I find this synopsis way too long. It leaves no room for imagination and reveals the ending. It includes parts of the storyline not neccessary to put in a synopsis, for example, 'partying in an empty flat near her appartment'. It also seems very simplistic.

Shattered Silence(also named Sexting in Suburbia) synopsis:
'When Dina commits suicide, her mom starts looking for an answer. A painful secret begins to unravel.'
This synopsis is short and sweet. It outlines a brief description of what happens in the story, but leaves all the uncovering and revealing to the audience. Which also lets it down, by not given any detail at all, the audience may become disinterested by the synopsis and not bother watching it.

Our Synopsis:

A young girl documents the struggles, torments and abuse she encounters everyday on an  online blog. When a girl at her school stumbles across Katie’s blog, she is bullied even more severely than before. After attempting to commit suicide, Katie attempts to re-build her life. Shortly, when she meets the love of her life Charlotte at a support meeting, her life begins to change for the better. We crated our synopsis to be similar to films of the same genre. In it, we introduce the protagonist, we mention the troubles that they go through and how the equilibrium is disturbed. Then we briefly describe the effect of disturbance on our main character and her recovery. Our synopsis is very short, this is because we didn't want to give too much detail away, leaving it open to interpretation. We chose to include the themes of same-sex relationships, suicide and bullying as adding this will interest and appeal to the target audience.
